It has recently come to our attention that the change from the Single Business Tax (SBT) to the Michigan Business Tax (MBT) has resulted in insurance companies and financial institutions being excluded from eligibility for the community foundation tax credit.
The rational for this change is that since insurance companies and financial institutions are not subject to basic business tax, but rather franchise tax or business tax in lieu of other taxes, they have already been given special tax status and as such cannot also claim the standard credits. This includes the Community Foundation endowment credits.
There is currently no plan for pursuing a modification to this current legislation.

Cadillac , MI - February 10, 2010 - A resident in the University of Michigan School of Dentistry's graduate endodontic program and another in the pediatric dental program are recipients of scholarships awarded by a community foundation whose funds were gifted by two School of Dentistry alumni.
The residents, Dr. Ryan Brandt of Lake City and Dr. Samuel Blanchard of Cadillac, have each been awarded $2,500 from the Cadillac Area Community Foundation to help them continue their education at the U-M School of Dentistry. The two received the financial assistance as a part of the Ardis/Lueder Northern Lower Michigan Endowed Scholarship Fund . Dr. Michael Lueder (DDS 1975) established the scholarship at the suggestion of his mentor, Dr. Charles Ardis. The endowed fund provides scholarships to dental students so they can complete their dental education. The Fund may give preference to students who are from Wexford, Missaukee, and Osceola counties in northern lower Michigan, or students who demonstrate an interest in practicing in those counties.
Blanchard, who is completing his pediatric dentistry residency at U-M, said he appreciates the financial support he has received. Although Blanchard said he hasn't yet decided what he will do after graduating in December, "I have enjoyed teaching while I have been in the residency program, and am hoping to balance dentistry and teaching."
For Brandt, who earned his dental degree from U-M in 2005, this is the third year he has received the scholarship. Although he said that he has not made any final decisions about his future plans, "I hope to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Ardis and Dr. Lueder and offer my care and compassion the same way they have," he said.
The University of Michigan School of Dentistry is one of the nation's leading dental schools engaged in oral health care education, research, patient care, and community service. General dental care clinics and specialty clinics providing advanced treatment enable the School to offer dental services and programs to patients throughout Michigan. Classroom and clinic instruction prepare future dentists, dental specialists, and dental hygienists for practice in private offices, hospitals, academia, and public agencies. Research seeks to discover and apply new knowledge that can help patients worldwide. For more information about the School of Dentistry, visit www.dent.umich.edu .

Giving Circles
By Dan Kadlec
With the markets sinking, a lot of retirees may be cutting back on charitable
giving along with their discretionary spending. But it's still possible to
effect a philanthropic impact by organizing or joining a giving circle. Much
like investment clubs, giving circles consist of a small group of friends
who pool their resources and gather--often over a potluck dinner--to pick
charitable causes to donate to. Such circles have become especially popular
among aging boomers looking for a way to bring meaning as well as fun into
their retirement years.
The number of giving circles in the U.S. doubled from 2004 to 2006--to about
400, according to a study by the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers
in Washington. Growth has continued since then: giving circles have donated
$100 million over the past four years. And the ragged economy may be accelerating
the trend. In Cadillac, Mich., Laurie Melstrom formed a giving circle in early
October--just as the stock market was swooning. "This economic downturn
has a lot of people breaking out into a sweat," says the 54-year-old
homemaker. "Yet everyone said, 'Count me in.'" Individually, the
group's 10 or 12 prospective members can't make much difference, but together,
she says, "we'll be able to make the kind of donation that our small
charities are really going to need in tough times."
Members of Melstrom's group will contribute $500 annually and meet up to four
times a year to decide on local charities to support with a grant--any cause
its members deem worthwhile. For instance, Party with Purpose, in Hoboken,
N.J., has raised more than $125,000 to fight Alzheimer's and help preserve
the oceans. In Charleston, S.C., Chicks with Checks has contributed big bucks
to battle breast cancer and support a local hospice.
To start a giving circle, simply call a meeting, agree on a mission and set
dues. For more guidance, go to givingforum.org and givingcircles.org At a
time when many people have less, this is one way to do more.

Thanks
to the efforts of Jane Agren, Media Specialist at Mackinaw Trail Middle School
Library, and a grant of $500 from the Cadillac & Kellogg for Youth Committee,
almost 500 students were able to spend the day with Michigan author Jonathan
Rand. The program was initiated by Ms. Agren to promote student interest
in reading books, and perhaps writing them.
Mr Rand, a popular author of adolescent books, wrote the well-known and very popular "Michigan Chillers" and "American Chillers". He has visited Cadillac in the past, and because of his presentation and influence 5 years ago, the class of 2009/2010 recently published a book called "The Dogman Hibernates in the Catacombs of Cadillac". Mr. Rand was presented with a copy of the book during his visit. Current Mackinaw Trail students are already making plans to write their own installment in the "Cadillac chillers" series.
In an effort to demonstrate to the public the difficult choices that have to be made when grant applications flood into the office, and to gauge community interest in the programs and projects that requested funds, the Cadillac Area Community Foundation let the public choose the grant recipient at the 2008 Cadillac Business Expo. Four potential grantees who have local programs/projects in need of funding were featured. Information was available about each organization and their featured program. Expo attendees were asked to review the information and then cast their "vote" for the program/project that they would award the funds to. At the end of the Expo the votes were tallied. Senior Project Fresh was chosen by Expo attendees at a rate of 2:1 over the next closest project/program. The Foundation has made the $1,000 grant award for the program to the Wexford County Council on Aging and it will be used to supplement their funds for the 2009 Senior Project Fresh Program. The added funds will help the program to reach more seniors and provide them with coupon books enabling them to purchase fresh vegetables and fruits during the summer/fall months of 2009.
The Cadillac Area Community Foundation can accept donations online at a secure website. Donors can use this feature with a credit card by clicking the JustGive button on the left of the screen. This is particularly handy for donors who would like an immediate receipt as the site does issue the necessary paperwork for your income tax specialist.
The Cadillac Area Community Foundation is pleased to announce that its newsletter, The Power of Giving, is now available online. To read the newsletter, click here. To have the newsletters emailed directly to you please send an email to cacf@cadillacfoundation.org with the word "subscribe" in the subject line.
Congress
has extended the IRA Charitable Rollover as part of the Emergency Economic
Stabilization Act of 2008. As enacted, the IRA Charitable Rollover permits
IRA owners age 70 ½ or older to make direct gifts from their IRAs to
qualified charities totaling $100,000 per year without suffering any negative
tax consequences since it does not have to be declared as income.
The staggering success of the charitable initiative was not lost on congressional
leaders, many of whom voiced their support for permanently approving this
unique giving incentive. One such leader in Michigan, for example, is Congressman
Dave Camp (R-MI), who remains a leading proponent of the IRA Charitable Rollover
legislation and will be a significant voice in trying to persuade his congressional
colleagues of the need to permanently extend it.
“I am amazed at how Americans have embraced the new giving law…and
I expect this extension to generate substantial charitable dollars that will
help those in need in Michigan and beyond,” says Camp.
For
further information about how this extension can help you please contact your
financial consultant or call the Cadillac Area Community Foundation at 231-775-9911.
The Cadillac & Kellogg for Youth Committee has awarded a grant in the amount of $1,100 to the Cadillac-Wexford Public Library for the purchase of re-usable cloth bags. The bags will be distributed to children who are receiving their first library card to promote responsible use of both library materials and resources. The library will discontinue providing plastic book bags in 2009.
Senior Project FRESH is a program that distributes coupon books to qualifying senior citizens to use to purchase fresh foods. The coupons can be used at a variety of places, including the local farm markets, to purchase fresh foods. The response in our community for this program was overwhelming this year. Even after distributing 175 coupon books, a waiting list of area senior citizens quickly developed. The Foundation Board of Trustees stepped in and provided additional funding for this program through a grant in the amount of $600 from the Health and Education for Youth and Seniors Fund to provide coupon books for seniors who were on the waiting list. The State of Michigan stepped in and matched the Foundation grant for an additional $600. In total, 225 coupon books were distributed to local senior citizens.
The January 2007 - June 2008 Annual Report from the Cadillac Area Community Foundation is now available. To view this report, please click here.

Don and Pat Lakin, longtime supporters of the arts in the Cadillac community, and the Foundation, were thrilled to have their field-of-interest fund provide Cadillac citizens the opportunity to hear the Saline Fiddlers. Grant funds also provided for a Saturday morning workshop for 20 budding fiddle players, ranging in age from 5 - 55 years old, to have one-on-one training with the Saline Fiddlers.
The Cadillac Area Community Foundation was presented with the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce "Brick Award" at the "Rise Up" Cadillac event held in the City Park on July 18.
